Letter
by the apparent founder of the modern ilikepie movement

Hi,

I'm wondering when you came up with "ilikepie"? Probably without any right whatsoever, I have a proprietary attachment to this handle, since I picked it as my e-mail log-on in 1992 (I was ilikepie@UClink.berkeley.edu) and always received compliments about it. When I left school and signed up for hotmail, Microsoft offered me "ilikepie23". "Never!" I said. I still do likepie, but I guess I'm never to be ilikepie again. I briefly wondered whether I might have unconsciously started an ilikepie movement. Now I just wonder whether ilikedpie first, and how other people came up with the name.

Thanks for sharing any ilikepie thoughts. I hope you're enjoying your piece of it.

We get the weirdest letters regarding our ilikepie site-- but yours is without a doubt the most delightful!

My sister and I like pie a lot, and we wanted to have a reason to take people to pie at the Medici (a restaurant near the University of Chicago which has excellent apple pie). So we started the web page/contest. So far, all the winners are actually our friends.

Of course people have always liked pie, but it is now clear your role was instrumental in founding the modern ilikepie movement. My sister and I are definitely late comers-- I think we started the contest in 97, and registered the site in 99. We expect to reach profitability 3Q 2002, which we will of course split with you.

My other two favorite places for pie are the Norske Nook in Osseo, Wisconsin, and the Little Pie Company in New York. What are yours?

Do you make pie? I've only tried to make pumpkin pie. It's kind of dangerous to make pie I think, because then you have a whole pie in your house. I would have to explain to my husband that the dog ate it, every day.

P.S. Since we have decided to publish your letter, we now owe you pie. We will not ever buy the TV producer pie, however, due to our belief that short form improv sucks.

Sample some more pie!
